RHINOPLASTYImprove Your Profile with a RhinoplastyRhinoplasty, or a "nose job" as it is known colloquially, is most often used to remove a hump or a bump and reshape the tip of the patient’s nose. In many cases, the nose will also be made smaller. This is one of the most common procedures performed in the plastic surgery world and in our offices, and is one of the few procedures we can recommend for teenagers as well as adults. Generally, a rhinoplasty is performed by making incisions inside the rim of the patient’s nostrils. The soft tissues of the nose are then separated, which is when the cartilage and bone can be reshaped according to what is desired by the surgery. This reshapement will depend on what the patient’s problem happens to be, and what has been determined as the best course of action by the patient and Dr. Wells. If the patient is interested in reducing the size of his or her nose, small fractures are made in the nasal bones near the end of the surgery. Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure and takes between two and three hours. Internal dressings are removed in two days, the sutures are removed in five days, and a splint is removed in ten days. If the patient does not mind the splint, he or she can return to work or school in one week. It should be kept in mind that minute changes to the structure of an individual’s nose can make a drastic difference in how it appears. This can also mean a surprising difference in the patient’s overall facial appearance. Make sure that you ask plenty of questions when you come in for a consultation and read as much as you can about the procedure beforehand. This can help you to make an informed decision about the choice to undergo rhinoplasty. If you find you are interested in having this procedure, individuals in the Lexington or Louisville areas can contact our offices to set up a consultation with Dr. Wells.
