A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that aims to raise and firm the breasts, providing a youthful contour to the appearance of the breasts. Over the years various experiences such as pregnancy, weight loss, breast feeding, etc… can affect the overall shape and appearance of your breasts. The natural evolution of the breasts over time is to droop due to loss of volume, skin elasticity and the effects of gravity.
Good Candidates for a Breast Lift
Most women with drooping breasts due to numerous reasons (listed below) are good candidates for a breast lift. Generally speaking, that is a non-smoker, in good health, and generally stable with their weight (meaning no large weight fluctuations).
Please read some of the common factors that cause women to seek out a breast lift:
- Pendulous breasts (may be of an acceptable size) with a flat longer shape
- Lack of firmness and/or substance in your breasts
- Breasts that have their nipples and/or areola’s pointing downwards (especially when nipples are below the breast crease) when the breast is unsupported with a bra
- stretched skin around the breasts
- asymmetrical positioning of breasts (one breast may be higher or lower than the other)
How is a Breast Lift Done?
Having a breast lift done is similar to other breast surgery’s Dr. Wells does. We’ll briefly outline for you what breast lift surgery is like so you can decide if it is right for you.
In most cases you will be asleep throughout the surgical procedure; however in some cases Dr. Wells will use a combination of local anesthesia and an intravenous sedation. But please be advised 99% of patients will receive general anesthesia.
Breast Lift Surgery Begins
The surgery will begin and Dr. Wells will make incisions to remove excess skin and reposition your nipples on the breasts. This will done according to your pre-surgical consultation to the decided upon preferences (mutually decided upon between the patient and Dr. Wells). Dr. Wells will reshape the breasts, repositioning the tissue and removing excess skin. During the surgery the nipple will be moved to the mutually agreed upon, natural height on the breast.
Once all excess skin, repositioning and shaping has been completed Dr. Wells will close the incisions and tighten the skin. The sutures will be done in a manner that supports the new shape of the breasts. A supportive dressing will be applied at the end of the case. This is replaced with a bra the following day .
